Online Lesson: Mark Woolway- Getting Rid of Excess Backswing Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne  Hi Wayne, I’m 47 years old, been playing for a few years, based in the SF Bay Area, and want to get a lot better a lot faster. I’m willing to do whatever it takes. I’ve taken lessons from just about every notable instructor in the Western US. I’m a 13 handicap now, down from a 16 a few weeks ago. I’m a big fan of your YouTube videos and looking forward to working with you. Thanks very much.

Mark can advance his game in a big way by eliminating excess lifting and twisting in the backswing, which will put him in much better shape to make an effective approach to impact. Mark almost initiates his swing with his hips, and as he over twists, he also raises up out of his forward bend at address. This type of movement allows the right arm to overturn behind the body and at the same time get his right hip in such a position that he can’t use the ground to initiate his forward swing. I’d like to see Mark try to delay his hip movement until he feels the upper body pull it into action, and at the same time try to deepen the right hip, which, if he can do it, will eliminate his lifting. The backswing will feel tighter, more compact, and more stable while he feels more bent over and deeper into his right heel. From here he can keep his upper right arm more in front of him as opposed to pulled back behind him which gives him a chance to improve his approach to impact. I suggest the drill with the stick on his knee line to give him the feeling and the feedback to get him to stop pushing his hips out from under him. Improving the overall pivot movement will be a big first step toward a better swing.
