Online Lesson: John Lamendola Coming Off Shoulder Surgery, Still Looking for Speed

John, the 2018 club champion at Winged Foot, is the most prolific online lesson taker in the history of WayneD.com. I would still rather work face to face but when that’s not possible John has proven that with consistent help via the computer (and it helps quite a bit that John has a great room to film in and all the gizmos to measure his progress) you can incrementally work things into your swing that help you improve. John has had to take about 3 months off due to his shoulder surgery and coming back it’s not unlikely that he wouldn’t be utilizing his body as efficiently starting off. In this video I compare him side by side with Xander Schauffele, who I believe produces as much power and precision for his size as anyone playing the game. One thing I picked up here that is new, and I think an interesting idea is starting the driver swing with the hips cocked slightly off-center forward so that they can move more aggressively into a right load by P2 and P3. I’d like to see John try this as well as keeping his right arm a bit higher and more extended going back. Then, in the forward swing, I note how Schauffele begins to drive up off the ground sooner in downswing than John and how much more active the right leg is. This is of course dangerous to less talented players who tend to drive the leg in the wrong direction but with a better backswing load I think John can benefit and increase his speed.
