Online Lesson Follow-Up with Darin Pape

Darin’s follow-up swings show major improvement in the backswing and transition as he goes from crossing the line and steepening the shaft to laying the club off slightly and flattening the shaft as he starts down. The difference between his prior shaft position at P5 and the new one is striking. Now the issue is what to do with the flatter early downswing shaft position as far as delivering the club to the ball on plane while squaring the face. When the shaft is steep at P5 it doesn’t make sense to supinate the left forearm and add flexion to the left wrist as this will only further steepen the shaft. Good players who have this steepening move almost always flatten the shaft late, which causes multiple timing issues and tends to get the shaft “stuck” behind the hands at P6. Now that Darin has a flatter shaft at P5 he needs to start supinating and adding flexion to the left forearm and wrist so that he can use a “flat to steep” pattern as you see in Hogan and lots of other great ball strikers. This is not an easy thing to describe so I film myself in my house demonstrating how the forearm and wrist action should work.
