Online Lesson: David Baker-Working on Steep Approach and Flip Release

“I took a lesson from you in 2011. Glad you reached out with the on- line offer. I hit driver and 7 iron. My misses start right and stay right. I like it the feel of hitting a fade but struggle with my release. Lastly, I don’t feel using the ground efficiently. When I try and push off my back leg my upper body jumps ahead of the shot.”

David exhibits nice motion and fluidity and sequences his swing well. He moves the handle toward the ball starting down the way I like to see it, but it happens without any flattening of the shaft. He sets up with a good amount of forward bend but has a bit of trunk lift in the backswing, which makes it difficult to add any hip depth during the swing. I’d like to see David set up more erect, then try to add posture during the swing with an athletic sidearm throwing motion. The key for David to improve his throw or flip type release is to have his hands more forward at P6, and in order to do that he must get his upper left arm more down and forward (adduction) instead of having it stay up and back. The sidearm feeling involves bending into the forward motion while driving the upper arm and elbow in front of the trail hip and supinating the left forearm. This will hopefully flatten the shaft and allow for the addition of right wrist flexion while retaining left wrist extension from P5 to P7. David fears the right to right pull hook, so if he can get the club to approach less from the outside, he will then have to convince himself to turn the lead wrist down and swing around to the right. Right now we want to see the shaft approach from less in front of him and more on top of the left forearm, and we would also like to see the creation of more posture during the swing to make room for a more forward left arm.
