I don’t know if I have ever given an online lesson like this: Brent’s technique is nearly flawless. It is on plane at every crucial position, hips are in the box both face on and dtl, no excessive lifting or arm collapse, literally nothing to criticize about how he has built his swing mechanics. So, what is the lesson about? I always look for athleticism in a swing, especially one as sound as Brent’s. When I watch it, I get this sense that he could do much more with his pivot in terms of stretching, loading, and creating a more dynamic transition so that he would have more potential to compress the ball with his irons and create more speed with his tee shots. I would be interested in what everybody thinks about this. Brent’s swing reminds me of what Jim Flick (r.i.p.) would always insist on, that the arms move the body and not the other way around. I liked Jim, but I never agreed with his teaching philosophy. I see the elite swing as an athletic movement that involves tension and explosiveness. The difficulty is creating fluidity as you are creating speed. Brent certainly has the fluid part down. As you will see in the video when I (perhaps unfairly) put him side by side with Dustin Johnson. Extend, load, second stretch in transition, compression: that is what I would be trying to get Brent to feel in a face-to-face lesson.
