Online Lesson: Brendan Howell- Looking for More Dynamic Pivot Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

just wanted to see what your thoughts are. Usual things I hate are the lack of angle coming down which causes the fast over taking rate, not a lot of sustain. I like to fade the ball or very straight. The neck tilt always goes a bit to the target as well on downswing.

As you will see Brendan has a genuinely nice swing, but one which, on closer review, is a bit weak heading into the ball and at impact. Position wise there is not a lot wrong with this, but as I watch it I see a pivot that is not loading and unloading aggressively enough or with good enough sequence to produce the kind of handle torque at the top that will create more lag and thus have the opportunity to sustain the forward lean of the club into and after impact. My advice here is for Brendan to focus on deepening the right hip in the backswing and then using the added pressure under his right foot to help initiate the hips in the change of direction before the upper body has a chance to lean forward. Brendan has enough angle at P6 to have a good impact, but he can’t sustain it as he has gotten his upper body too forward (nose directly over top of the ball), and if he added flexion to his left wrist and sustained his right wrist angle he would have too much forward shaft lean and an open face. The only way to square the club and get the ball up in the air enough is to release the club early. If Brendan can improve his loading and transition it will help him stay behind the ball, which will then give him a chance to improve his impact.
