“Hi Wayne, I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I love your analysis. In the iron videos I’m hitting a six iron. My stock ball flight is straight to slight draws. I can miss it both ways with a bad swing, usually a straight push or pull draw. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!”
Ben is a lanky youngster (I don’t exactly know how old he is, but he is certainly much younger than I am) with an excellent golf swing that I believe simply needs to be more controlled with his irons, which I would do by working on width and right arm and wrist extensor action. Ben’s long swing and large right shoulder turn works much better with the driver (although a bit of width could help there as well) but with the iron you will see that the pullback of the right upper arm and scapula getting to P4 leans his upper body to the left, messing up his sequence and moving his head in front of the ball, a situation which almost always produces some throwing action in the release (not to be confused with a right arm throwing action in transition) and thus a strike that is weaker and more inconsistent than it could be. I suggest stop and go drills to get used to the feeling of only swinging back to ¾ length, which would then allow him to concentrate on getting the forward swing started with the lower body instead of the upper body being pushed to the left in transition.
