Online Lesson and Follow-up combined: Nicolas Gobel

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is a good example of what can happen to anyone taking a golf lesson: you get numerous things to work on, try implementing at least some of the items, then look at the swing again in the next lesson and find that nothing has changed. I don’t watch other teachers teach so I’m not sure what their strategy might be at this point, but in my mind I simply have to reiterate what was suggested in the first lesson and hope that the additional knowledge of the stubbornness of the issues will help the student regroup and reapply themselves to the task at hand. In Nicolas’ case the main issue is his lifting up in the backswing, which causes cascading problems with the rest of the swing and ends up with a flip release. There are a few ways to attack a chronic problem like this: the first is to understand that if you don’t exaggerate feelings and instruct yourself to overdo what you need to do, things aren’t going to change. The second thing is that you absolutely need visual feedback on what those feelings and those mental instructions are actually producing: you need to film your swing after you think you have done something differently and see if you really did or not. For Nicolas, he must try to lower in the backswing: it’s not going to be enough to try not to lift. He is not trying to lift in the first place- he just does it. So, if he doesn’t try to reverse it and lose height in the backswing, he probably won’t see enough change to make a difference. Nicolas has many other issues to address over time, but everyone must start somewhere.
