Toks will be a junior at Rutgers this year and has played in every tournament his first two years, showing great improvement his sophomore year. He still felt like he was not where he wanted to be as far as being confident in his ability to self-correct, and he noted that his misses were too big, mostly to the left. This was our first meeting, so after watching him hit a few and thinking to myself that here was a considerable talent, I filmed it and offered him some suggestions. As you will see it didn’t take him long to accomplish what we were after (he hit two shots and then I filmed again), which points out the importance of the set up position for anyone, but especially good players, who are usually inclined to do the right things if their initial starting position allows them to move better. Toks had the ball too far back in his stance and had his weight a bit too much in his heels with his hands low, so we moved the ball forward, centered his body and his weight, and raised up his grip at address. His hands and arms were moving out away from him in the takeaway which led to a quite upright left arm at the top of the swing, so we wanted to get the arms to move more straight back to inward at the beginning and the position at the top to be a little flatter and deeper. As you will see, he incorporated everything we talked about almost immediately, a rare occurrence certainly but always nice to see.
