It’s pretty flattering when a guy whose business is promoting golf instruction DVD’s and websites comes all the way from Oklahoma to take a lesson. Of course, there are far less tornados in Maryland than in OK, so that could be part of the reason. Anyway, Tim is a very good player who, like many you see here on the website, has an impact problem caused by a recalcitrant right arm. The lesson here highlights just how difficult it is to change this particular habit, as you can watch Tim’s right forearm tip to more horizontal no matter what thought or drill we tried to do. One of Tim’s issues is his inability to swing at less than full power, as even his drill swings would go almost as far as a full shot, but with the same unwanted patterns repeating. We finally made some progress on camera by having him give full attention to just the movement of the arm starting down. I decided that he needed to do it completely out of sequence so I told him to stop at the top, move the arm inward with the forearm moving to a more vertical position with the triceps driving into the ribcage, and make sure that this happened before he moved his lower body. It came off like a 3 step swing, one to the top, two to move the arm, then three to move everything else and hit the ball. I figured that it was the only way he would ever get the feel of moving his arm the way we wanted it to move, as he had proven that any type of full motion transition simply failed to change the pattern. Even after doing this successfully and seeing how good it looked on the video he still had major problems reproducing the move. This was hard work and he remained patient enough to end the session with some better swings and an optimistic attitude about the progress he had made.
