Lesson of the Week: Steve McMullen

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve came down from Pennsylvania to see me because he was tired of not being able to compress an iron shot. He is a good player and likes to compete but he always feels as though he is scraping it around and relying on his ability to short game it into the hole instead of attacking the course with quality ball striking. The first thing I noted when watching Steve’s swing was his grip. It appeared to be quite weak and when I checked out the position of the club in his left hand I found it to be well up into the palm. We spent quite a while moving the club down toward the bottom of the palm closer to the fingers and bending the wrist inwards to get a couple more knuckles showing. After that we spent most of the lesson discussing and trying to execute a punch shot with the ball forward of center in the stance with a drive/hold release through impact. By the end of the lesson Steve was taking a nice divot in front of the ball and had his hands more forward at impact. The down the line video shows a radically different right arm action in the release, a good indication that he could sustain his line of compression much more past the ball than when he arrived at the lesson. There are obviously other things to work on but we felt as though we made some excellent progress.
