Lesson of the Week: Steve Barber, PGA – Working on Trigger, Width, and Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve is 55 years old and the Head Professional at the Locust Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. He is an accomplished player having qualified to play in 5 National Club Professional championships, but he has never made the cut and blames that for the most part on ball striking. He has been hitting his irons off the toe and not compressing the ball the way he would like and is looking for some things to work on as he gets ready to head back north to start the season. The first thing I notice is the hitch in the trigger and takeaway, which I will attempt to rectify right away. The takeaway shift/slide to the right is setting up an out of sequence lean to the left with the upper body in transition as the rib cage slides over the pelvis. We want to brace the right side better in the backswing as well as gaining width at the top, two things which will combine to make the swing look shorter, simpler, and more efficient. The end goal is to get the release to sustain better and not be so flippy, which is much more of a possibility when the head is not drifting in front of the ball causing the hands to have to flip the face to square it. To train the hands to make their way up to the ball to produce more forward lean we hit some punch shots with the ball forward in the stance. I think you will agree that Steve’s impact looks much better and he will tell you that the ball felt more compressed, which is nice.
