Lesson of the Week: Rokki Rogan

It’s always neat to see major changes in the course of a 2 or so hour lesson, and this one certainly qualifies. Rokki is a high level senior amateur who would like to compete on a national level, but has found himself falling just short of his goals due to erratic ball striking. He had been watching my videos for some time when he met Jeremy Wells, a student of mine who graduated college and is now living in Fort Myers and making his way on the mini-tour with designs to play the PGA Tour. Jeremy encouraged Rokki to accompany him over to Boca Raton to have a face to face lesson, and from the looks of things it will pay big dividends.

Rokki likes to film his swing and is a good student of the game, but was having a hard time incorporating the ideas he had learned from the website. I started by modifying his setup to one more upright and out over the balls of his feet, and from there we worked on moving the hands more inward going back with the club head staying more out, aiming for a less crossed position at the top. From that point we concentrated on the sidearm throwing motion, with the hands trying to head more out toward the ball and the lower body driving more diagonally to the left. We worked mostly with stop and goes, and he did a couple that showed major improvement in just about all phases of his swing. It will not be so easy to translate that into a full motion swing, but now that he has the feel and has seen what he can look like if he has the time to think about it, it will just be a matter of hard work and paying attention to how it breaks down when he doesn’t stop. He certainly got the gist of overall concept, and we finished the session with some pre-set punch shots to help him train his hands to square the club from the new approach position.
