This is the first time I have been face to face with Phil after 5 online lessons spread out over a couple of years. Phil likes the progress his swing has made (or he wouldn’t be showing up in Florida) and I think that if you go back and look at his older lessons you will agree with him. Here my focus is the action of his lower body. I find it highly detrimental to solid ball striking to have the body facing sideways at impact, and if I see the hips clearing late in the downswing and stalling through the hitting area I will almost certainly spend most of the lesson concentrating on getting the hips to open and the release to be able to work around more on plane to the left. As I do with many players I suggest to Phil to use the visualization and feel of a low sidearm throwing motion (what Hogan described as “half underhand, half sidearm”). This usually helps the player in many ways: to throw effectively this way you must be bent over a good amount, have your weight well over to the left side, and be as open to the target as you can get. Also, the right upper arm and elbow must drive in front of the chest and the ball must stay in the throwing hand until after it passes in front of the waist, which in golf terms means increased lag and ultimately forward lean of the shaft at impact, all things that would benefit Phil greatly.
