This is the latest in my ongoing sessions with Peter, a club professional from New York who visits me in Florida every winter to try to improve his game so he can be competitive in the club pro tournaments that are available to play in. Peter has real back issues, and when he found out that I had similar problems and had somewhat overcome them he was interested in hearing what I had to say. We hit it off nicely, and Pete’s swing has improved tremendously over time. In this lesson Pete is trying to incorporate my latest Basement lesson, where I talk about letting the grip drag a hair at the start of the takeaway with an immediate cupping and rolling of the left hand and wrist. I like what is going on here with the right arm, but Pete carries the grip drag too long without enough rolling of the face, which causes the clubhead to travel too far with the face closed and gets the right upper arm a bit too deep with the shoulder still moving up, thus causing it to be too pulled back at the top. He does a nice job moving it back in front of his chest coming down but the hands travel too far away from the body, making the approach a little higher than optimal and the approach a bit steep. I would like to see the face more toe up at shaft parallel in the takeaway by rolling the left hand more, and I think that would also keep the club from moving back so far outside the hands. The end result would be a more compact top of the swing with the right arm more in front of the body, both of which would be good things.
