Lesson of the Week: Mike Jones- Working on Steeper Shoulder Turn and Freer Hip Movement

By Wayne | Videos

Mike drove 4 hours to spend two hours with me two days in a row, which gave us time to work on multiple items in his swing. Mike suffered from erratic driving, with most of his misses being  big pulls to the left. In order to fix the ball flight Mike decided to swing more from the inside, and when we looked at the first videos of his swing it was apparent that he had way over-corrected, and it was possible that he had never come from the outside at all and that his “pulls” were actually smother hooks that started left with the club coming from the inside with the face drastically closing to prevent the big block to the right. To get the club coming more from the inside Mike had dropped his right shoulder in the middle of the backswing, which pulled his left arm low across his chest and made his swing quite short, even though from his rehearsals it was apparent he had plenty of mobility with which to get the club back further. The first thing I wanted to see was what would happen if the club went back on plane, so I used my shaft in the ground to get that to happen, and Mike took to that quite easily. Next I wanted him to get his shoulders feeling more vertical, so I gave him the thought of left shoulder under and right arm up. To get his inside out path to improve we went over hand path in transition, and I suggested that the overall thought pattern would be under and up in the backswing, then more sidearm in the forward. By the time we finished he was getting the clubhead almost perfectly behind his hands at P6,which is a huge change to make in a short period. The last thing I encouraged was to let his left knee kick inward in the backswing to add to his hip turn and give him more time for the hopefully longer backswing.
