Lesson of the Week: Mike Barile PGA- Trigger, Tempo, Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Mike is an assistant professional working in Orlando who has watched the Wayne D. website for years and has now taken advantage of me being in Florida to come down and see me in person to hopefully change his swing for the better. His reporting on his play in general has the usual focus points: inconsistency and overall below standard ball striking leading to scores that don’t garner high finishes in the professional events in which he plays. As is my normal practice, I asked Mike a few questions while he warmed up, then filmed his swing at both regular speed and high speed. I could see right away that we would have to address his tempo due to his overly slow backswing, but the backswing had enough going on that we had to look at and try to change that there was no way to speed it up right away. Rather, we had to go with stop and go drills, where it is more beneficial to take more time going back to see and feel the changes we wanted to make in the trigger and then in the overall movement. We then went into hitting punch shots to get a feel for a better impact, and eventually, in his second lesson, got around to using the metronome and other methods to get his rhythm closer to the 3 to 1 that most high-level players favor. Mike has a lot to digest here but he is an athletically talented guy with good size who should be able to incorporate the changes and see some good results fairly quickly.
