Matthew is an 11 handicap who has been a member of WayneD.com for so time, and since he lives not too far from Baltimore decided to come up for a face to face lesson. My first impression was that Matt had better action than his handicap would suggest, but that he could improve his ball striking by focusing on backswing width and structure. You will see a side by side comparison between his first swings with a stop and go drill, and then with me doing some hands on moving, getting him to feel the extension and higher hands at the top. I wanted him to feel right arm spacing at P2 by “reaching” and “extending” the arms with an upper trunk turn that stretched away from his center (the head staying mostly in place or moving slightly to the right), while also having his wrists try to delay cocking. As he approached the top, I wanted him to try to keep his left shoulder down, as his normal move involved pulling the right arm into his body and around behind him which leveled his shoulder turn. He immediately liked the sense of better use of his pivot, and next time we can more fully address the transition and impact.
