Matthew is an English amateur is his late 20’s who has seen me for help about twice a year for the past 5 years. He has a great build for the game (lean and strong), and has toyed with the idea of turning pro. Going through his old swings it was apparent that Matthew’s backswing changes over time, and that he has not settled on a pattern he can trust. In this lesson we find him crossing the line at the top, not necessarily a swing killer, but in Matthew’s case, since he doesn’t flatten the shaft quickly in transition, he tends to be a bit steep in the forward swing. He almost always puts the club on the ball in a high-level fashion, so I wanted to give his downswing a chance to get to the ball in a consistent fashion by getting it on plane in the backswing. We tried a right forearm type takeaway with added forearm rotation, and Matthew, being a talented player, managed to keep the club more on plane almost immediately. He played in a tournament days after the lesson and reported good results.
