Lesson of the Week: Matthew Latham Controlling his Wedges

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

In this lesson we see an excellent young player with a powerful swing learning to control his wedge shots. Matthew can hit a pitching wedge 150 yards, but is not at his best when trying to flight his short iron shots, and has trouble from any type of in between distances. It’s not like Matthew will miss the green, but when you hit it as far as he does there are plenty of opportunities from 120 yards and in to hit the ball close and make birdies, and Matthew’s proximity to the hole with these shots is not up to the standard that it needs to be. Here we simply work on controlling the length of the backswing and follow through (sometimes choking up on the club as well) in order to get the hands more forward at impact and reduce the ball speed enough to reduce the launch angle and spin rate as well. The results will hopefully be a more penetrating ball flight with less susceptibility to wind and an overall increase in accuracy.
