Lesson of the Week: Mark Mannion: Working on a More Vertical Swing Shape

I only see Mark a few times a year as he lives in New York and visits his father at Peninsula whenever he can get away. His ball striking has improved markedly over the last couple years and here I stick with the general idea of a more up and down swing shape considering his tendency to get flat and a bit laid off at the top. The first thing I suggest is for him to quiet his trigger action, which in this case has him flexing his knees toward the ball and pulling his head back, both of which lead to the left arm pronating and staying more in front of him than we want. I’d like to see him stay out over the ball better and feel that he deepens his hips by keeping his pelvis more tilted while the right knee stays bent. This would help the arms get deeper by P3 and the shaft more vertical. Mark has large shoulders and chest muscles and I think that a deeper turn will get his upper trunk more involved in the backswing as his left shoulder could get more under his chin as he loads to the right and behind the ball. From there we can get the hands to feel more under the chest at P6 and impact to feel more left and upward with the left wrist moving more into flexion, something he has not concentrated on in the past.
