Lesson of the Week: Lon Tabatchnik- Posture Causing All Sorts of Problems

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Lon is a very strong, athletic guy who has managed to maintain a high single digit handicap despite some serious swing issues. Recently he has fallen on hard times, and one of his friends, a regular student of mine, gifted him with a series of lessons. What you see here is a result of only two hours’ worth of work, and I think you’ll agree that his rapid improvement proves that a good athlete with strength and coordination can accomplish quite a bit technique – wise in a short period of time. Lon is quite muscular, and players like him cannot afford to set up to the ball with poor posture, as it affords no chance to make a decent backswing turn. With his weight well back into his heels, overly flexed knees, and bent over posture, Lon had to move his arms well out away from his body in the backswing while lifting his entire body a huge amount. Once he got taller and more out over the ball at address he was able to move his arms more inward in the takeaway and get his right arm across his chest (he is right handed but plays lefty), which in turn led to him being able to keep his downswing coming less from outside the plane.
