Lesson of the Week: Justin Miller

Not all lessons go smoothly or end up with a major change in technique. There are time constraints to begin with (this was an hour lesson) and some issues are particularly stubborn. After all the lessons I have given and all the experience I have amassed I can usually get a swing on tape, even if it’s a drill or a stop and go, that looks significantly different and suggests that the student is on the right track and has the right stuff to work on. In this case we run into a major headache with Justin’s difficulty in flattening the shaft in transition. He can do it fairly well without the ball in front of the club, but put a ball there and it reverts back to coming in steep. He has an odd sort of neck and head movement during the swing which has an effect when he is going to hit the ball, and while we work on ideas that will allow him to sequence better and work into a sidearm motion that will hopefully flatten the shaft we just don’t have time to try to change that. In the end you see me do what I usually do to leave Justin with a good feel, grabbing him and pushing and pulling him to get him to exaggerate his pivot movement enough to put more drag on his left arm. After that he needs to keep after the feeling of leaning the club back on his right index finger and getting the club head to helicopter back in transition. Getting this incorporated into his swing will undoubtedly be a combination of things and a lot of repetitive drill and segmented swing work.
