Justin’s swing is a good example of fluidity and athleticism, and his physical abilities partially save him from the mechanical problems he has with his backswing, although not enough to keep him from flip releasing at impact. His issues start immediately in the takeaway as the hands lift the grip up and away from his body and his left wrist begins to bow. This gets him to P-3 in a flat and un-cocked position, and eventually, despite some pretty good sequencing, he approaches impact with the shaft stuck behind him, his hands not up to the ball at P-6, and his lower body moving out from under him. My goal is to make his takeaway more conventional by keeping his hands and the entire club more on plane, then moving to some impact drills to give him the true feeling of a drive/hold release, which of course compresses the ball and controls ball flight (not to mention adding distance) much more effectively than throw release he is currently forced to employ.
