Jon and I have been working hard on getting him not to steepen the shaft in transition, and although he has vastly improved his pivot movement he still tends to pull down on the grip wherever the shaft is pointing at the top. It occurred to me after watching the swing of Christiaan Bezuidenhout that if Jon could move the clubhead sideways with his hands before pulling down on the grip, as the South African does, it would make a big difference. Jon tried it, and it was one of those “eureka” moments where a simple thought effects a major change immediately. The movement of the hands and wrists as the body is doing all sorts of complicated things in transition is a personal pattern that most players develop when they are young, and it is a tough thing to change. The subtle change (although not subtle at all to Jon) of the timing and feel of what Jon is doing at the top of his swing here makes his swing function far more effectively.
