Lesson of the Week: John Lamendola- The Process Continues

By Wayne | Videos

John took his first online lesson in June of 2015, and 6 years later he is still looking to swing and play better. His improvement over that period is substantial, which would explain why he still trusts me to comment on what he is doing and thinking. Golf is a lonely sport, and it can overrun your brain if you don’t have someone to bounce things off. John has been playing for a long time but just recently has raised his game to the level where he is competitive with the best amateurs. Looking at his swing over the years it is obvious that patterns are hard to change, but with constant work and perseverance, improvement is possible.

I also feel that I have improved as a teacher since we started, and I am getting better at simplifying my instruction while not leaving out any of the most important items. When I think about how I played when I was constantly in the hunt, I always tried to boil down my swing thoughts to easily remembered keys, like bullet points in an outline. Having the mind cluttered with too many details is a recipe for confusion and poor play, but that doesn’t mean that the mind can be blank. Very few players are good enough to “not think about anything,” because their technique in any part of the game is flawed and needs some direction to not make the same mistakes over and over. John’s text after he viewed the lesson was succinct: “wider, maintain the lag, head over ball.”  You will see the visual and hear the explanations in the video, but for John to incorporate the changes he first must remember them, and then eventually do them at the same time, which is the ultimate difficulty of the game. So much going on, so little time to think about it.
