Lesson of the Week: Jody Pelfry-Looking for Better Impact

By Wayne | Videos

Jody is a 2 handicap at 49 years old but struggles with ball striking (I’m sure some of you are saying “how bad could it be?”) and would love to be more consistent (who wouldn’t, although I like to tell students that you don’t want to be consistent until you are really good).  As soon as I watched Jody hit a few shots I knew I could help him.  His posture was poor with his weight on his heels, always a recipe for big pivot problems.  Sure enough, Jody’s lower body was square at impact and his hands were flipping like crazy, which is always the case when the body has not rotated at all into impact.  We fixed his posture, getting him bent from the hips into more of an “athletic” stance on the balls of his feet, then tried a few split-hand punch shots to help get the feel of both the lower body and upper body opening more into impact, trying to get more of a “covering” feeling with the right side driving through the shot, something that is almost impossible to feel when the body is facing the ball at impact like it was at address.  He got a nice feel of using his entire pivot more effectively, and the quality of his shots improved greatly by the end of the 2 hours.
