I’ve been encouraged by some members to do more lesson videos with middle to higher handicap players. Jack is 65 years old and over the last few years his game has deteriorated to the point where his swing feels short and stiff with no power and the ball going all over the place. Jack is particularly inflexible, so I know that if I can get his swing some freedom he can lengthen it a bit and get it coming down less steep. As you will see, Jack pulls the club inside the plane in the takeaway while keeping the face somewhat closed. This combination of being under plane with little or no forearm rotation causes the right shoulder to lift and jam up, making it impossible for a guy like Jack to get the arms to go back much further than left arm parallel as the shaft crosses the line and the right arm stays well above the left. The first thing I do is to present Jack with an obstacle that will give him the feel of taking the club back less low and inside, and once we get that going I get him to rotate the face more, which helps his right upper arm externally rotate as he gets to the top instead of pulling up and behind him. The last stop and go we film is a nice indication of how Jack could get the club to swing back and forth with fairly simple plane shifts if he can accomplish the items we worked on in a real swing.
