Lesson of the Week: Gene Slavens- Poor Posture Leading to Early Extension

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

If you’ve been watching my lesson posts you must have noticed by now a common pattern whereby an address position pressured more toward the heels inevitably leads to the entire pelvis moving forward toward the ball during the swing, leaving the left leg in the way of the swing’s rotation and causing the right upper trunk to hang back in the forward swing. There is no way to achieve much of a forward leaning impact when the body is facing the ball at contact, so the first priority in a swing like Gene’s is to get him some depth in the right side of his pelvis in the backswing, then keep that depth in transition and into the downswing so that he has a chance to drive the right shoulder and arm down the plane and to get the hands more forward at impact. When I watched Gene hit a few I knew that if we changed his balance at set up and gave him the feeling of moving into his right heel in the backswing while staying out over the ball and maintaining right knee flex that he would be coming from an entirely different place in transition and might be able to clear his left side better through impact. Gene is a big guy, but I feel like I still have to do hands on work to get him to feel what I’m talking about. These changes feel so radical that it takes constant use of the camera for the student to believe that what he is doing is not crazily exaggerated. I think you’ll see that Gene makes a big improvement over the course of the 1 ½ hours of work.
