Lesson of the Week: Eli Spaulding- Working on Swing Changes for the Winter

Eli is a first-year student at Loyola College in Baltimore who was directed to me by his coach, Chris Baloga, an accomplished player in his own right, when he found out I had moved back to the area and had taken the job as Director of Instruction at Argyle Country Club. Eli’s main concern was his contact and ball flight, which had gone from a slight fade to a more pronounced left to right curve with too much height and not enough ball compression. My first thought was that Eli was standing too close to the ball, and when his takeaway went out away from his body his entire swing stayed too far out in front of him, causing a steep approach and a glancing impact. Standing further away from the ball and narrowing his stance gave him more space to work with and helped right away to start shallowing the club in the downswing. The videos here are Eli’s second lesson, and my goal was to have him take the club back more on plane, which in his case would be more inward toward his body. That in turn should get him deeper at P3, and then lower and more compact at the top, a better place from which to start the forward swing. From the top I wanted him to feel his arms and hands working more downward so that the club could approach slightly more from the inside. Eventually we would like Eli not to be stuck with only a fade, but to have his normal shot pattern be a straight ball which could be adjusted with body alignment and face alignment at address.
