Lesson of the Week: Dylan Murray

I was in Florida working with Champions Tour player Gary Hallberg when he informed me that he had some longtime friends (Kevin Murray from Connecticut and his son, Dylan) of his own coming to visit. As it turned out (in kind of a weird coincidence) Kevin had been watching the website for months, and had already signed up to come down to Maryland to take a face to face lesson with me the following week. Since we were going to play together a couple of times and since Dylan, a college player at Presbyterian College in South Carolina, had been struggling mightily for some time, Kevin asked me if I would work some with his son.

Well, what a pleasure it was, as Dylan is an extremely talented player who had simply been suffering from bad information. It was a no-brainer to take Dylan from launching the ball straight up in the air with huge amounts of unwanted spin to hitting bullets with controlled swings that he could easily ramp up into 300 yard plus drives. Dylan had been instructed (who knows why?) to release the club as early as possible and re-hinge his wrists quickly in the follow through, and the results were ugly right through the bag. We played on a windy day that really brought out his deficiencies at impact, and after looking at the video I knew that I could really help him quickly. As it turned out he picked up what I was telling him even faster than I expected, as he said that having the hands forward at impact was “what I used to do”. As you will see, there are plenty of great things in his swing, and if you add a superior impact you are going to have a fine ball-striker.
