Lesson of the Week: Dick Rotner Making Great Progress at Age 72

I’ve been watching a few videos online that claim to offer the “best” swing technique for senior golfers (even though the instructors offering the advice are anything but senior) but I think you’ll see here that golfers who are getting up in years (I’m 62, so I qualify for that category) like Dick can still make improvements by focusing on sound fundamentals that prioritize the forward swing instead of concentrating on lengthening the backswing. Dick, like most seniors, has limitations in the amount he can separate his upper trunk from his lower. Do we really want to create more backswing length and put the body in a position where it can’t possibly open up into a decent impact position that doesn’t require a flip release, or is there another way to create a sound backswing that is in position to come forward without being overly in to out (which, by the way, would be a disaster with anything besides a driver)? The answer you see here is “yes”, that by starting with an open stance, getting the most out of the backswing without overturning the hips and right shoulder, and utilizing a “hard catch” athletic sidearm throwing motion transition combined with better downswing pivot movement Dick has been able to keep or increase his normal distance while making more consistent contact.
