Lesson of the Week: David Cohn

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

David and I have known each other for some 25 years, and I have worked with David a number of times during that span. He is 65 years old but works at his game and to improve his physical capabilities like someone 30 years younger (actually more so since most people of any age don’t do nearly as much work as David does). He has traveled the country to seek out the best advice, recently working with Jim Hardy, Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer, and Sean Foley. He happens to be a member at my club, Woodmont CC, and over the last year has settled in on working with me and has managed to stick with my ideas while working with trainer Joey Diovisalvi (Joey D) on physical training that might allow him to do the things we would like to see in his swing.

In this video I used some different lines to show David a general deficiency in his pivot movement that has been a chronic problem pretty much forever. In drawing the “big box” it is obvious that while Hogan deepens his hips and keeps his head out over the ball (thus causing the lowering that is present in most great ball strikers) David comes under himself with his hips and backs his head up in transition, which leads to his right arm falling behind his right side, which then leads to a weakened impact position. Since this has been the default move of David’s swing for 30 years he realizes that it will take constant monitoring and training to change it. The most obvious first need is to deepen the right hip in the backswing while maintaining right knee flex. Then we have to maintain that depth while driving the right hip inward and keeping the head out over the ball. We are fighting habit and core weakness, but David has been making nice strides and is hitting the ball better as a result.
