Lesson of the Week: Colton Nash- Great Hands, Got to Improve Mechanics

By Wayne | Videos

Colton is 16 and hasn’t been playing much golf due to Covid, but he would like to play on his high school team and hasn’t been shooting the type of scores that would get him there.  His swing has multiple issues, and that always presents a challenge for an instructor to prioritize what to start with and how to proceed.  For the viewer, this type of lesson can be quite instructive to see what items I pick out to focus on, and to be sure every teacher might have a different take.  I have always tried to look at the swing in its entirety, diagnose what the main problems are, make sure there are no major conceptual problems, then give the student a chance to succeed by making sure the grip and setup are good to go.  After that, given that Colton can put the club on the ball without decent mechanics, I figure that if I can get him to improve his overall swing, he has the chance to be a very good player.  In this lesson I focus on his takeaway and start in on his right arm movement in transition.  I realize this will be a project, so I’ll just take it a bit at a time and see what works and what doesn’t.
