“I’m Chris Trotter, I’m a member, just joined a month ago, and this is my first swing analysis for the year. I’m open to more lessons moving forward but would love a general diagnosis and hear suggestions of where I should go from here.
About me:
I live in San Francisco, I’m 6’2 (225 lbs.) 36 yr. (8 handicap).
Average drive: 300 yards
Average 8 iron: 165 yards
I’ve been playing on and off for years. I’m a hockey player and have tried to keep my swing athletic. I’ve just started taking lessons for the first time ever and am trying to really step up my game and get to scratch.
Misses:
I either miss push-fade or snap-hook. My irons are pretty dialed, but my woods can get quite wild.
Things I’m not sure about:
1. Right foot – is it ok if it lifts just a bit at contact? I’ve seen guys with it up (JT) and down (Finau), not sure what’s right for me.
2. Loose, not ridged- I’ve been trying to stay loose and not make the swing too connected or stiff. Try to use my natural athleticism. Maybe I’m not rigid and connected enough. Not sure.
3. Too steep? I’ve been trying to figure out if my swing is too steep and if I’m shallowing properly. I’d prefer to shallow by bringing in my right elbow instead of doing it in the hands.
4: Fast hips? – I can’t figure out if my hips are too fast. Would love to hear what you think of my hip speed and if I’m using them correctly.
5.Footwork – a little lost on footwork. Would love your thoughts and that too.
I’ve been working hard at trying to get my right arm under and control my footwork. I’ve been trying to swing naturally too, the way my body likes to move, because it’s easier for me to repeat when it feels more natural. Overall, I’m wondering if this is a good base swing and if there’s anything I can do that won’t completely disrupt the swing but adds some control. But I’m totally open to anything. I really want to get to scratch so I’m willing to put in the work to get there. Thank you so much! I love the channel and all your content and truly appreciate your opinion.”
Chris has an excellent swing that will improve immediately when he learns to keep his hips deeper in the forward swing. In these swings we see classic early extension where the right hip rotates toward the ball in transition and the right leg drives to the right of the target, leveling the pelvis and robbing the arms of needed space in the impact area. It is not surprising to see push fades and/or snap hooks when this occurs with the longer clubs, especially the driver. The idea is to feel a “crunch” in the hip flexors that tilt the pelvis downward (anterior) while the right hip tries to drive the left hip forward and upward at a 45 -degree angle to the left of the target.
