Lesson of the Week: Carlos Sera- Grip Pressure and Right Arm Issues

Carlos is an excellent senior player that I last saw many years ago. He has come for a look due to his trouble hitting solid hybrid and long to middle iron shots. I first noted Carlos’ grip and the appearance of looseness, especially with the right hand. He was surprised when I told him of the importance of firm pressure in the last three fingers of the left hand, and even more surprised, almost shocked, at the amount of pressure I demonstrated for him between the right palm and the left thumb, something that words cannot readily describe (one of the many reasons face to face lessons are more beneficial than computer lessons).  It appeared to me that his loss of pressure between the hands was contributing to his issue of the upper right arm getting too far behind him and too bent, making it impossible for him to straighten it in a timely fashion in the forward swing, which led to his hands approaching impact from well away from his body. We worked on feeling width in the backswing and the new grip pressure with some stop and go drills, then set up a station so that he could feel his hands passing by his body lower and closer to him, which meant that his right arm was in better shape at the top and then better at straightening in the downswing, which in my mind uncomplicates the necessary wrist action to square the face and make center face contact.
