Lesson of the Week: Bruce Gross Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I’ve had quite a few people suggest that I post more of the hands on work I do with students, so here I include a segment of me trying to get Bruce to feel the timing, amount, and direction of the lower body movement and how his arms should not only trail but aim themselves to approach from more across his body. The instinct to hit at the ball with the upper body moving in front of the lower causing the club to approach from out to in was evident in Bruce’s first batch of swings, but that was to be expected given that he had no wrist cock and no lateral leg movement to shift his weight. Now that he has drastically improved on those issues I have to get him to understand how the proper sequence will delay the upper body long enough to have the arms, hands and club approach from more behind him on a workable plane rather than from way out in front of him. What you see here is what I call the wrestling portion of the lesson, and it’s a workout for both student and teacher.

The second part of the video shows me blocking his bad move by putting shafts in the way of the over the top move. Bruce instinctively avoids the shaft because it is physically present, and proceeds to absolutely crush a few of his drives, flying the ball at least 50 yards further than he has ever hit one. I warn him that as soon as I take the stick away he will slice the ball, and he proves this out by actually hitting the post with his clubhead even though I only left half of it in the ground. The goal is for Bruce to be able to recreate what the stick does for him without it there. That takes time, and is a perfect example of the fact that in order for training aids and stations to work you have to move in and out of them so that you can do what you need to do on your own.
