When I told one of my students about the amazing progress Bruce made in his first lesson, he reminded me that it would be the first swing I saw the next time I worked with Bruce that would decide if the lesson were really that amazing. I thought about that and reflected on how difficult it is to retain what you get in a lesson when the teacher is not always there to correct you when you begin to either revert to old bad habits or evolve into some new form of problem. I had to agree with him, so I pulled the camera out to film Bruce before I made any suggestions at all or even commented on his new action. The results were quite good. His left hand grip was still where we moved it to the week before, which was a very good thing because grips tend to drift back to comfort. His right hand, however, wanted to move back to a weaker position, and this caused some ball striking issues due to the open face, which when combined with his slightly over the top move and lack of experience in closing the club face at impact was causing a lot of hosel rockets and weak shots to the right. The other main items we had worked on, his wrist cock (or complete lack of it) and his overall leg movement had improved by about 80 percent, which is pretty drastic by any account. The big things now will be getting the shaft to shallow in transition and then to understand how to release the club in the impact area. It is obvious that with a little more work Bruce can have a very serviceable swing and will be well on his way to being a decent golfer, with bigger and better things on the horizon if he wants to put in the work.
