I met Andy about 6 years ago, when he was an intern at Woodmont CC where I worked at the time, and he was struggling to pass his Player Ability Test (PAT). We managed to get through that and have continued to work on his swing periodically since then. Andy’s chronic issue has always been the fact that his lower body pushed out from under him and by the time he gets to impact he is standing almost straight up. He tends to sit back as he triggers his swing, and when his weight gets into his right heel too soon he has nowhere to go but forward. Our focus here is to get the right hip to stay deep when it initiates the downswing, which is why I pull out the short shaft and stick it between his feet just in front of his knee line. This will give him something to avoid with his right leg, and hopefully it will combine his lateral movement, of which he has plenty, with a lot more rotation. The other thought he needs to stay aware of is the attempt to keep his head out over the ball instead of backing up like it does when he stands up through impact. If we can get him to be more bent over and more open heading into impact he could then use his gluteus muscles in a helpful fashion.
