Andrew is a 6 handicap who could be much better given his athletic ability and the nice sequencing of his swing. He complains of inconsistency, and I spotted two things immediately that I wanted to change that I felt would simplify his swing and make him a better ball striker. The first was the radically closed clubface in the backswing. Andrew, unlike most closed face swingers, keeps his right arm in front of him in the backswing, and thus instead of lifting and pulling his right arm and shoulder backwards, rolls his left arm up over the right and gets into a laid off position at the top. I’m thinking we can get rid of the complicated change of direction in transition by introducing both left and right forearm rotation in the backswing, which in my experience allows the right shoulder to eventually externally rotate and the left arm to stay against the chest. I also could see right away that Andrew’s feeling of being quick in transition was a direct result of having a very slow backswing. Andrew’s tempo would come out as something over 5 to 1, rather than the 3 to 1 that most Tour players utilize, and by using the metronome we brought his tempo up immediately. You will see the results on the video. It will likely take a while to fully incorporate these changes, but Andrew is for the moment committed to the process.
