If you have watched any of Andrew’s lesson videos (you should) you will see just how stubborn his backswing hitch has been to get rid of. Andrew is a good player and an athlete, and you might think that once he is made aware of such an obvious and exaggerated flaw that he could fix it fairly quickly. Of course, in golf this is rarely the case, as there are so many elements to putting the clubface to the ball that players often lack awareness of what they are doing and even when they see it in action on a video over and over they still struggle to feel what it is they are doing and what they can do to stop it or replace it. We have tried segmented swings, slow motion swings, using a metronome for tempo, but nothing has really clicked to get Andrew not to hesitate at P3 and accelerate and lift up to P4. Finally, and there is no real reason why it clicked in this lesson other than he has been working on this issue consistently, suggesting that he maintain a smooth motion through the point where he usually jerks the upper body up and back seems to have gone a long way to making this better. As Andrew tries to keep an even pace all the way to the top, he is also focused on staying down while turning, and he can feel when his shoulder turn stays on a steeper angle. Hopefully this improvement will stick around, and it will be interesting to see what he shows up with the next lesson he takes.
