Lesson of the Week: Alex Hooper

Alex has been coming to Woodmont to see me every now and then for a few years now. His swing has improved, but he still suffers from some pivot problems which eventually cause him to approach impact both too steep with the shaft too far out away from him as well as too wide with the hands too far away from the ball when the shaft is parallel to the ground coming down. He has worked hard to gain hip depth in the backswing, and he has definitely done that, but he has also gotten into backing his head up both going back and coming down. From the face on view we can see that he lacks lateral movement to start the forward swing, and he makes up for that by moving his head forward away from its starting position.

I start him off by holding a pole up against the back of his neck, pushing him forward to keep him out over the ball as he is swinging. This brings immediate results, the most notable being the shallower approach of the hands and the club as he stays more bent over and is able to slide his hips more forward and rotate at the same time. As I mentioned before his sequence problem (not starting the forward motion from the ground) causes his hands to release the club a bit early, so we have to do some specific work on that point. Here I go to a right hand only pitch shot, which requires the club bending back into the right hand and wrist in order to contact the ball correctly.
