Last Week on the PGA Tour: Jon Rahm- Tour’s Fastest Swing

There are several notable things about Jon Rahm’s swing, but the one that gets my attention is how incredibly fast it is. If you are familiar with John Novosel’s “Tour Tempo” you know that the average Tour swing takes just over 1 second from the time the clubhead first moves back in the takeaway to the exact moment of impact. Measuring swings with a video camera capturing at 30 frames per second and counting the number of clicks of the remote, Novosel found that the majority of Tour caliber players utilized a ratio of 3:1, and also that within the 3:1 ratio there were fast swingers (21/7), medium swingers (24/8) and slower swingers (27/9). Examples of a fast swinger would be Ben Hogan, a medium swing Nick Faldo, and a slow swinger Ernie Els. My guess is that Rahm would come in somewhere around 18/6, which is whiplash-like. Rahm employs a weak grip, uses a right forearm type takeaway in which the left wrist adds flexion (bows), and has the club well laid-off at the top of the swing with his arms well out in front of him. From there he drops the hands almost straight down and adds even more flexion to his left wrist into impact. It’s a short, simple looking maneuver that produces plenty of power and accuracy.
