Here are some notes from Ian Bruce, Stewie’s dad, who obviously knows what he’s talking about, which is nice, because I have to write less and just say that this kid is a tremendous talent and has a great future in golf ahead of him.
- Overall a stronger looking movement I feel
- The right loading with steady head is a work in progress and we need to focus on this more. We’ve tried the “left shoulder over the right foot” concept to exaggerate the right loading but then he drifts back to some left loading.
- The arm tension (especially right) at address and during take away and backswing may be a little better?
- Is the right elbow not quite as behind him at the top of the backswing?
- He has been able to get the club more on plane in the downswing (not so behind him) and went through a phase ( a couple of weeks) where he enjoyed hitting a straight ball and not the banana draw/hook ball flight. As with all changes, it’s easy to go too far the other way and this session on the range was not so good initially because he started showing the typical symptoms of a downswing, although at first flattening but then becoming a touch too steep. The shots were fat, pulled, weak, loss of distance etc. So, I told him he has to go back to coming slightly more from the inside (on plane ideally) and the longer clubs were instantly much better and squarely struck. It’s good for him to go through this process of going from too inside out, to on plane, and then suddenly too outside in and hopefully feeling the difference and knowing what is on plane. He seems to have the proprioception awareness of where the hands, arms and joints are in space during the swing which is so crucial for being able to repeat an on-plane swing. We’ll see if he can keep building.
- The “more open shoulders and hips” at impact and just passed impact is also a work in progress. Unfortunately, we haven’t focused on this much yet. Sorry. How does it look?
