JB Holmes: Utilizing Great Sidearm Action

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Here we have a nice, stable down the line view of JB Holmes hitting what appears (by the ball speed) to be a 7 iron, although the announcers don’t say definitively what club it is. Holmes starts with a standard athletic set up, then starts the swing by whipping the club under his hands in a move most any teacher would try to improve in a less accomplished player. From P2 to P4 he keeps his left arm well in front of him while adding left wrist flexion, then the cool part begins. Holmes waits to lower until the change of direction, at which point he increases his hip flexion and anteriorly tilts his pelvis (he bows into the downswing and deepens his hips) while his hand path moves outward above the ball and the upper right arm adducts (drives down and forward) more horizontally than most. Without the hip depth this might be an issue, but Holmes is creating space for the right arm and has always had an extremely late release, which keeps the clubhead back long enough to still approach from a nice angle. His is one more example of a short swing that produces a huge amount of power, much like Jon Rahm.
