Improvement: Peter Procops, PGA Part 12

By Wayne | Improvement

Peter is a fellow PGA professional who played the South American tour (Tour De Las Americas) for 5 years and Golden Bear Tour (Mini Tour) 5 years 1997-2001. In this lesson I’d like to see a stronger right hand grip with Peter rotating the face of the club more open in the backswing with the palms and clubface more on plane. I want to see the right shoulder externally rotating a bit faster helping keep the right arm from going behind and causing the crossed position at the top. There is good right hip depth in the down-the-line view but the knees get a bit forward, the left foot tilts in and the left leg isn’t getting out of the way soon enough with a small backup of the head. In the face-on view the push with the legs is too forward and not around enough. I want to see the left knee move backwards quicker. The left foot tilting may be the problem so my suggestion is to lift the left heel a little bit on purpose to help get a little more hip rotation with a little less lateral slide. There is still a little bit of lift showing up in the backswing. I want to see Peter retain the flex in his right leg in the backswing and aim his hands a bit lower approaching impact. The overall shape and movement is better and Peter’s swing is looking about as good as I’ve seen it, definitely showing improvement.

Peter’s Commentary:

Some of the things Wayne mentions in this video continue to creep back.
Getting my right arm to stay high on the takeaway has always been a difficult feat. At first it was hard to rotate my face open while keeping my right arm high but after loosening up my wrists I was able to let the toe open.

Keeping my hips deep on the backswing was also very difficult and some days harder than others depending on the flexibility in my body. Starting with tall posture did make room for me to lower.

Sliding on the downswing has always felt comfortable as opposed to rotating. I discovered that if I lowered on the downswing first and rotated my left hip back, I was able to push off the ground more which limited my slide. What helped me a lot is putting a shaft against my right knee and my left hip. This help me to increase the angle on my downswing to have more room for my arms to get back to address position.
