Danny Lee and Johnny Miller: Front Foot Flying

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Watching Danny Lee at the CJ Cup (he finished 2nd) I noticed his leg action and immediately thought that it was similar to a swing I have looked at many times, Johnny Miller. The movement I reference here is the front foot, in these cases the left foot, sliding well to the left away from its original position as the hips continue to rotate aggressively just after impact. In Miller’s case his huge lateral pelvic drive along with his rotation move his left foot forward and left, while Lee, more of a squatty, right leg hold with less lateral movement in transition has his foot move more back behind him and around as he drives up off the ground and straightens his left knee. In both cases the players choose not to care about keeping the feet in place but focus instead on clearing the hips as hard as they can for what you would have to figure is a feeling of more power. Two other “front foot flyers” to watch are Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson.
