Online Lesson: Stewie Bruce- Excellent Junior Swing with some Typical Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Stewie hasn’t been playing that long but it’s evident that he is an exceptionally good athlete and has great potential as a golfer. His set up and grip are sound, and the overall plane and sequencing of his swing are excellent. I particularly like how he lags the club and gets his hands well forward heading into impact. The main things I’d like to see Stewie work on are right loading in the backswing with his right arm and shoulder more relaxed at address and then into the takeaway. The tension in Stewie’s right shoulder leads him to pull it…

Rob Palazuelos Part 2 and Part 2 Follow-Up: Part 2: Improved Backswing, Need More Hip Depth in Downswing & Part 2 Follow-up: Continued Improvement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Both Lesson Number 2 and the follow-up in this post (scroll down to see the follow-up): You can see from the side by side of Rob’s first lesson and this one that he has made drastic improvement in his backswing plane and his right arm movement in the forward swing. By improving the takeaway and adding forearm rotation Rob has gotten the club pointed more left at the top and his right arm in a more “ready” position with his right shoulder less retracted and his upper arm more in front of him. In the forward swing you can see…

Online Lesson: John Lamendola- Comparison with Tiger Woods

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

John and I have been working together successfully (almost exclusively online) for about 5 years now, and this lesson is from April when he was just coming back after missing a few months due to shoulder surgery. John has all the equipment anyone could need right in his basement, so we have been able to keep an eye on his swing on a regular basis. In this lesson we go over a lot of the things we have focused on since the beginning, and I side by side him with his favorite player, Tiger Woods. As many of us do…

Online Lesson Follow-up: Robert Palazuelos

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Rob has done a nice job improving his takeaway, which before had seen his hands pushing well down at the start, thus shutting the clubface, and leading to an across the line position at the top. Here we see Rob still somewhat across at the top but definitely improved. I would like Rob to extend more in the backswing with his right arm gaining more space away from his body, then work on keeping the club more on plane (pointing to the left) by increasing his forearm rotation from P3 to P4 (he is already better up to P3) and…

Online Lesson Follow-up: Justin Miller-One Change Leads to Others

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

In this follow-up lesson Justin succeeds in accomplishing my main suggestion in his last lesson and keeps his head nicely out over the ball (staying on the forehead line) from the DTL view, giving him more right side bend through impact and a more leftward exit. In the FO view, however, Justin has set up with more upper body tilt to the right, and instead of loading right like he did when more centered at address, he stays more on top of the ball in the backswing and eventually does not get his hands as far forward at impact where…

Online Lesson: Will Madden- Using Ground Pressure to Help Transition Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Watching Will’s swing the first thing I noticed even at full speed was the initial widening of his wrist angles in transition, a movement that has been called “casting” but with the newer anatomical descriptions is now “ulnar deviation” of the left wrist and “radial deviation” of the right wrist. Looking for a reason that this is happening I start at the beginning of his swing and suggest that he center his set up rather than start with more pressure on his left side. In the takeaway I’d like to see more extension away from center with the right arm…

Online Lesson: Justin Baker- Improved Posture Down the Line, Now Addressing Face On

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

In this video you will see Justin change his posture quite a bit from more erect and heel oriented to one more out over the ball and what I would describe as more “athletic”, with pressure more forward toward the balls of the feet and more bent over from the waist. I like to call this a more “ready” position at address, much like a tennis player waiting for a serve, or a shortstop waiting for the batter to swing, or maybe a runner in a distance race with hundreds of competitors lined up waiting for the gun to go…

Online Lesson Follow-Up: Thomas Petric- Improving his Pitching

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

In this follow-up lesson video, you will see that Thomas has made some nice improvement in his technique based on our last lesson. His tendency to dip down and scoop under the ball has been mostly eliminated as he tries to stay taller and forward lean the shaft at impact. His face on look at impact is much better, but I would still like to see him get his hands more forward when the shaft is parallel to the ground in the forward swing so that he could use less of the bounce and achieve more consistently solid contact. To…

Brian Muench Online Lesson and Follow-Up: -Addressing Right Arm Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I met Brian when I worked at Woodmont CC and he was an assistant pro. He has since gotten his amateur status back and had an exciting win in 2018 when he prevailed in the Oak Hill (Rochester, NY) club championship. He is getting close to playing some quality golf and would like to compete on a State Am/ State Open level. He has always had wrestled with the problem you will see here, where the right arm bends and pulls back in transition, leaving it unable to straighten as it heads from P4 to P6, bringing the hands toward…

Online Lesson: Justin Baker- Focusing on Posture

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Posture has a huge effect on what happens when the player starts to move, and in just about every case where I see a slumped, heel oriented setup I suggest something more athletically angled and “ready”, with the upper body out over the ball and the foot pressure toward the balls of the feet (but not on the toes). I like to see the player bend from the hip joints so that the pelvis has some downward tilt to it, and I use the analogy of just about any sport where the player needs to be able to move quickly…
