Online Lesson: Jon Bui- Overall Swing Shape Leads to Poor Low-Point Control

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

This is Jon’s 2nd online lesson (plus a follow-up) and if you go back and watch his previous lessons on the site you will see some real progress.  However, sometimes there needs to be more significant changes in order to get the improvement we are looking for.  In Jon’s email he notes: “Need more consistent contact/low point and eliminate left miss.  Would like higher hands if possible but when I try it feels like I’m really swinging left and coming out-to-in.” The cause of Jon’s low point control problems is his approach angle, which is double shallow, meaning that the…

Online Lesson: John Lamendola- Looking for Ways to Improve

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

I’ve been working with John for some time, and he has done remarkably well considering we have only been face -to -face a few times and most of our work has been online, which is a testament to the fact that online lessons can be beneficial.  John is lucky in that he has a nice setup in his basement with Trackman and plenty of room to film his swing front and back, and in this case, John is not looking for a fix for a particular problem as he has been playing and hitting the ball well (he just returned…

Online Lesson Follow-up: Victor Herak

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

“Hi Wayne- Here are 2 swings, fo [face on] and dtl [down the line], for my lesson follow-up for your review.   Things that I was focusing on, based on your previous recommendations, were as follows: FO: In my setup -get my hips more centered rather than leaning left, -play ball a little more forward rather than on my nose. Felt like I was way behind the ball with a lot of weight on my right side. At p2 get wider in the takeaway. At p3 try to get wrist cock no more than 90deg. Previous you mentioned my aggressive angle…

Online Lesson: Ben Munson- Working on Controlling Swing Length

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

“Hi Wayne, I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I love your analysis. In the iron videos I’m hitting a six iron. My stock ball flight is straight to slight draws. I can miss it both ways with a bad swing, usually a straight push or pull draw. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!” Ben is a lanky youngster (I don’t exactly know how old he is, but he is certainly much younger than I am) with an excellent golf swing that I believe simply needs to be more controlled with his irons, which…

Online Lesson: Brandon Moore PGA- Working on Lateral Hip Drive and Sidearm Throwing Motion

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

“Wayne – looking forward to your guidance here.  When I’m hitting it good it’s really good, but I have times where it gets off and my misses are maddening as the contact is very weak and the ball is almost knuckleball-ish.  Very weak with no compressed feeling or spin.  Generally, my misses are straight, and I feel like I have good face awareness, but the contact drives me crazy.” In the video we will see that Brandon has wrist and right arm problems getting from P3 to P4 as well as little or no lateral drive with his hips, issues…

Online Lesson: Jesse Droemer PGA- The Elements of Reshaping a Swing

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Jesse, an assistant professional from Texas, has played in a Tour event and is competitive in his section against other club pros.  You can see that he has a fluid swing with nice sequence, a bit on the quicker side overall which I would recommend for physically smaller golfers (Jesse is 5’8”, the same as me).  Jesse told me he would like to work the ball left to right, and in watching his swing it seems to me that his pivot is more geared to an in to out swing than one that would start the ball to the left. …

Online Lesson: Ryan Hom- Different Problems with Different Clubs

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

This was an interesting online lesson as it was one of the few I’ve done where the issue that I found with the iron was completely different than the issue with the driver, which makes sense since the two swings have some significant differences.  With the iron Ryan sets up off center with his weight (pressure)  well to the left.  He loads a bit to the right but starting so far left he gets his right side behind him from P3 to P4 which breaks down his left arm and leans his upper body toward the target with his head…

Online Lesson: Josh Bialowins PGA- Working on Pitching Technique

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Josh is an assistant professional at Champions Retreat in Augusta, Georgia, and sent these videos of him doing some around the green pitching with the report that he was developing the dreaded fear of chunking and skulling what would seem to be simple shots.  I’ve seen this problem with players of all levels, and the fix is almost always the same since the problem in technique is almost always the same as well.  I’m a big believer in the leading -edge type pitch being the go-to, or “stock” shot around the greens, unless the shot specifically calls for “using the…

Online Lesson: Mike Ballo PGA- Tightening Up an Excellent Player’s Swing

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Mike, assistant pro at Westchester CC in New York, won the New York State Open in 2019, which tells you how good he is because that must be one of the most difficult state opens to win in the entire U.S.  He is good friends with John Lamendola, and since Mike struggled a bit with his ball striking in 2020, John recommended that he send me some swings to have a look.  I try to treat every player I see with the same intent, that is to simplify the body and club movement to create better conditions for solid and…

Online Lesson: Owen Otto- Sergio-like Action Needs Trail Arm Training

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Owen is a 9th grader (just turned 15) and is relatively new to golf, having concentrated more on basketball until Covid shut down the indoor sports.  He started with a swing that went well outside and looped back inside and has worked recently on gaining depth in the backswing to eliminate some of the need to shallow the club.  One of the main problems here is that Owen is right-handed, but always set up from the left side when given a golf club.  He is obviously an excellent athlete and has gone from a mid-80’s shooter last year to low…
