Online Students: Thomas Delaney

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is the email I got from Thomas’ dad Eddie in answer to my request for some background information. In my first look at the swings I saw a nice, strong motion with a good instinct for hip movement and shaft plane approach. As you will read below Eddie picked up on the lack of lateral movement and his description of Thomas as “laid off” is something I would attribute to the “pinched” left arm In the backswing, which causes him to roll his right arm up to get around the restriction on the left shoulder. This further leads to…

Online Students: David Trungale

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

After watching David’s swings I was interested in finding out more about his golf history before I did the analysis. The following came from David in an email:   “I appreciate the quick response. I started playing golf at age 15 and am currently a 21 year old college student. (I do not play organized collegiate golf, just independently)   I never had any decent coaching when I played varsity golf in High School; my coach was very anti-mechanical and told me not to change anything in my swing. But I still practiced several hours a day. I would hit…

Online Students: Derek Cribb Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I think it would be interesting to go back to watch Derek’s other online lessons either before or after this one to see the progression in the first three and then the bit of regression here in the fourth. Derek reported in that he had been playing and scoring quite well a few months prior to shooting these swings but after getting busy with work and life and not having time to practice or play much had run into a poor stretch of play. In analyzing the swing we see Derek’s usual fluid move and stable lower body from face…

Online Students: Laurent Girouille

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

If you ever wanted proof that perfect tempo does not make a perfect swing this would be it. I counted Laurent’s tempo at 24/8, a perfect 3/1, and yet his mechanics have a lot of room for improvement. Here is an email Laurent sent along with his swings, and as I mention in the video he does a great job of self -diagnosis:   Hi Wayne first I want to mention that I loved your site and really enjoy my weekly dose of video golf analysis :) I few word about me : iam currently around 9hcp and still going…

Online Students: Mike Haase

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Wayne, I really appreciated the assessments you made of the videos I sent in. I wanted to take a little time to absorb the information you discussed and to work on a few things before I reached out to you to set up a time to chat. Please let me know a day and time that works best for you. I realize the pga show is this week upcoming. I will not be attending but if you are and your schedule is restricted we can certainly wait until after the show. With that said, there are a few thoughts/ideas I…

Online Students: Chris Mauer

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Chris’ swing is one more example of good lines and excellent sequence and motion being compromised by lack of pivot depth. If you are wondering why I call my general teaching method the “Pivot Compression Golf Swing” it is because there are so many swings that fail to approach their potential due to substandard body movement. Chris does a great job with his aggressive tempo and great rhythm, and for the most part keeps the club right on plane until the approach to impact, where his lack of hip depth causes his arms and hands to come in high and…

Online Students: Stuart Hoare

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is a good one to watch as there are some essential items that we go over that I think will really help Stuart’s swing, starting with his balance and posture at address. Stuart sets up with his knees flexed towards the target and a lot of space between the back of his butt and his heels, and as his swing unfolds this has a tremendous impact on the entire ensuing pattern. He demonstrates almost a perfect takeaway, but as the hands reach the top of his swing his arms collapse somewhat, indicating that his “extensor action”, or the feeling…

Online Students: Justin Baker Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Justin sent his swing in last year around this time and then came down for an in-person lesson as well. In that time he’s been working hard on what we went over in the previous lessons and he has vastly improved. Improved sequencing, improved impact position, lots of good stuff. In this lesson we see Justin setting up with his hands a little too close to the ball, he combines that with dropping them from the top more than I like to see leaving him stuck with an in to out approach to impact.     See Justin Baker part…

Online Student: Nicholas Sheppard

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Nick is an 8 handicap who is dissatisfied with his ball striking, suffering from general inconsistency with pull hooks and weak block fades being the most prevalent bad shots. We see here a solid set up and a pretty good looking move, but the first thing that jumps out is the slow backswing tempo. I count the swing out (to 40/8) and suggest using the metronome to add pace to the backswing. One of the reasons that the 3/1 rhythm is so common amongst good players is that it encourages an athletic transition, and that means that the lower body…

Online Student: John Mannion Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

If you watched John’s first online lesson you can readily see that he has made great improvements in his swing simply by normalizing his setup, which was pretty radically tilted back and to the right initially. Here he looks nice and square and centered, and it makes a huge difference in the overall path of his swing. Now we can move on to other important items, namely his tendency to overswing and to spin his hips rather than driving them laterally. The concepts I go over here are the “early catch”, wherein I encourage John to experiment with trying to…
